Movie Review--Real Women Have Curves
Sunday, 05 June 2005
From Netflix: Set in East Los Angeles, this is the story of Ana, a Mexican-American teenager struggling to break free from the responsibilities and expectations of her mother, Carmen, and sister, Estela. Ana wants to attend college so she can better herself (she's received a scholarship to Columbia University), but she's needed in Estela's sewing sweatshop, where women labor to make dresses that are then sold for many times what the shop is paid to make them.
* * * 1/2 from me. I liked it, especially the girl who played Ana. She had that teenaged girl eye roll, pout, slumped sitting and walking look totally down. Brought back some very distinct memories of how much you think you know and your mother doesn't. I also loved her relationship with her grandfather and father. Grandpa helping her get out of the house to meet up with the boy and dad, for standing behind her and helping her to go after her dreams and then dealing with the fallout from mom. Definitely worth watching. It's mostly in English, but turn on subtitles if you don't understand Spanish.
